Meh. Rock Band for the Xbox, which I've been looking forward to, gets unreasonably jacked up from the U.S price of £75 ($150 on amazon.com) to £180 in the U.K. Too much. Will pick up Guitar Hero 3 instead.

2008-03-29

I've begun a new blog to detail the development of a game called 'Fiver High'. It's for a competition at work to see who can get the most hits over the course of a month (April). A game is probably a bit too ambitious, and won't pick up the hits quick enough, but wtf. At least it'll be fun trying.

Don't forget you have another couple of days to download Undertow free from Xbox Live to make up for the problems at Christmas with the service (if you were busy celebrating Christmas with your family and didn't notice anything wrong, well, we'll just keep quiet and take the free game thank you very much).

Off sick from work with a cold at the moment, which always feels like a wimpy excuse for being ill, but can't pretend it's flu, and calling it a "man flu" always sounds pretentious. Anyways, have tons of work still to do from home despite my brain being frazzled, which means I've ended up playing games instead.

"Blue Moon" is a boardgamers' game from Reiner Knizia, and anyone who's played "Magic" should feel at home. Keldon Jones has cleverly turned it into a PC/Mac version (very kind of Kosmos to release the artwork) with a brutal AI. It's a great way to learn what is a great two player card game in the non-interweb world. I've only beaten it twice, but then I am ill with man cold.

The "Art of Theft" is a PC game from Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw, who writes the "Zero Punctuation" reviews, and is an old school style platformer that is incredibly addictive, with a story that quickly kicks in, and upgrades that suck you back for one more go to try and better your last attempt at a level. Highly recommended, worth downloading for the next time your office loses it's interweb connection and work stops, or your forced to work from home. ;)

"The Duel Between Gaming Magazines and Websites". The last magazine I bought regularely was for the sega megadrive (think it was called Megadrive, or some other equally inspired name. Great magazine, though, till it sold out was sold). Then, with the internet, it just seemed pointless. Magazines always seemed a month behind. Now, they definately are. I can find blurry shots of Japanese games myself online. Why wait a month to see them in print? And with people like the Escapist's Zero Punctuation reviews, and metacritic, well, it's all over really.

Can't imagine this McDonald's sim flash game will be up for long, as you are encouraged to lay waste to rain forest, sack employees and bribe officials in a desperate attempt to stay in the black while you manage the company. Not a bad way of getting across the impact fast food has, but a high score chart would have been nice - even a green badge/yellow badge with stars, perhaps. Download/Play it while it's up. I can probably count on one hand the things I have bought on day of launch. Bioshock joins them. "BioShock isn't simply the sign of gaming realising its true cinematic potential, but one where a game straddles so many entertainment art forms so expertly that it's the best demonstration yet how flexible this medium can be."

Board Game Geek has a great gift guide so you can save yourself some pain and give a decent game as a gift to the folks that usually drag out Cluedo on Boxing day. Two birds with one stone, and helping to rid the world of Monopoly. Brilliant!

2006-11-22

Time magazine and the New York Times don't have a lot of good things to say about the the PS3 (in short: hopefully the 6 months before the European launch will give Sony time to shape the thing into something half decent). Looks like the Wii360 is still the best choice for gamers...

2006-11-17

Happy Birthday to Reiner Knizia. Bit sad that there are people who only think of Monopoly, Cluedo or Risk when you mention that you play board games when there are people like Knizia who has created more great games tham many will ever know (try Lost Cities or any of the Lord of the Rings games or Blue Moon City or jus the Blue Moon game or...)

NetAcquire - must give this a shot when I have a moment. All five of the following four steps here from boardgamegeek:

After you download and install the software (about 30 secs on high speed connect)---double click and follow these steps:

1 - Make sure your IP/URL is set at acquire.sbg.org
2 - host port should be 1001
3 - local port should be 0
4 - enter a nickname
5 - Hit Enter and you'll enter the lobby. Games are almost always going on. If you've played the board game then it'll be a piece of cake.

If you follow these 4 simple steps you should be fine.

Bejeweled?! Bejeweled?! I have reigned death from an F15 across entire continents, single-handedly fought to clear my name across New York against the Mafia and crooked cops in prolonged gun fights using every available weapon to hand, and thrown the winning touch down pass with seconds on the clock, and have I got a penny to show for it? Nice preview from Tom's Hardware of the 'Scarface' game: The game features perhaps the most eclectic voice acting cast ever assembled for a video game: actor James Woods; comedy duo Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong; rapper/actor Ice-T; NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt Jr.; actor Jason Mewes ("Clerks"); actor Ricky Gervais; and Cypress Hill rappers B. Real and Sen Dog, as well as original cast members Steven Bauer and Robert Loggia. Al Pacino helped select a Tony Montana sound alike. Insert your favourite Scarface quote here...
